Compass Trails

A compass is so easy to use that we thought that we would teach you just the way that Sez our Group Leader taught us. First you need a Silva Compass, just like this one.

Now hold the compass with two hands directly in front of your tummy with the "direction of travel arrow" on the perspex pointing straight ahead of you. Always travel in the direction of this arrow. Next you need to select your bearing. You do this by turning the dial on the compass until the bearing that you want appears by the line which says "read bearing here". Now turn your whole body around until the "compass end north arrow with luminous strip" lines up with the "housing north arrow head with luminous dot". If you have got this far all you need to do is walk in the "direction of travel arrow". Now you are reading a compass. Well done - you won't get lost now!

Here are some compass trail games to play.
