History of the Clevedon Scout Group

Group Leaders Report 1999

01 January 1999 to 30 September 1999

If I were to summarise in one sentence what January - September 1999 was to the Clevedon Scout Group - it would be this: "1999's successful Scouting at Clevedon Scout Group, has secured its future into the 21st Century". If I were to summarise what the same year has been to me personally in one sentence it would be "1999 was indeed my most happiest time as a leader in Scouting and never before have I been more satisfied with the effort that has been put in".

So what is it that we have done which has been so successful:

  • As a Group we have committed to getting the Cubs and Scouts out into the Community, to camp in lodges and into the outdoors.

  • We have facilitated specialist training among our leaders both youth and adult.

  • We have secured a significant amount of funds which has enabled a vast improvement to the standard of our equipment.

  • We have increased Scouting's availability to the young people of Clevedon by opening a new troop.

  • We have had a lot of fun.

If you wonder how these things have come about seemingly under your nose it is by the commitment of Cubs and Scouts, the Committee and Parents and of course by the Leaders who have actively supported that "anything is possible" in Scouting.

This Scout year has not been without its share of bad publicity and negativity both from its National Association, the Media and from within its own leadership ranks. I refer of course to the huge financial losses of the Association, the Whitby Leader issue, the change to the uniform and the change to the setup of Auckland Scout Area - to name but a few. Regardless of all of this, we have provided consistent programming, activities and have remained positive and have moved forward throughout it all. For that this Group as a whole is to be congratulated.

The highlights of our year are:

For Scouts…

  • the opening of the troop and the increase of numbers from 7 - 10 in a very short time

  • its programming, planning and preparation

  • a successful camp to Motu Moana and a social sleepover at the Den

  • the selection of Patrol Leaders and the introduction of the PLC (Patrol Leaders Council)

  • attendance of the patrol leaders at a Cossgrove Course

For Cubs…

  • themes of Maoritanga, World Conservation, Out in the Community

  • involvement with the Save the Kokako project and Ranger Hugh

  • a successful Six Leaders Training Course

  • continuation of the McDonald's breakfasts/dinners once a term

  • successful Camps to: Karaka, Camp Maynard and Motu Moana and a sleep-over at the Den

  • visits to McNicholl Homestead and Paradice Ice Skating Rink

As a Group…

  • participation in NZ JOTI

  • visit to the Auckland Central Gang Show

  • collection for Plunket in Clevedon Village

  • participation in the District Church Parade

  • participation in the District Committee Meetings

  • regular Leaders Meetings

  • concentration on bringing a new Group together

I would like to thank some very special people in this Group - whose support as a team, to me personally and to this Group has been beyond comparison with any of the teams I have worked with before. To Bishop - Congratulations of your achievement of Queen's Scout and your effort to bring this Cub Pack up to an exceptional standard. Your commitment to becoming a fully trained and fledged leader surpasses many of your own age range and you should be truly proud of your own achievements in Scouting as a leader thus far. To Ambo - you have launched a wonderful troop of Scouts to become something quite exciting and your calming effect on most of us is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your availability to jump into any Scouting Activity not only to do with your own troop. To Tely - thank you for your never failing love of scouting and for upholding its fundamental principles in everything you do. Just quietly I, and the rest of the Group, would dearly love to see you in a blue scarf. We do genuinely appreciate whatever you feel able to give to the Clevedon Scout Group at this time and hope that the next year will bring you more formally into the Clevedon Scouting family. Thank you also for being the husband of the Group Leader and all that that entails. To the outgoing Committee thank you very much for your dedication and hardwork over the past 9 months in reaching what looked like impossible goals. Without the support which comes from you this Group would only partially function. I wish the best for the incoming Committee and for success in its new challenges.

Insignificant though it may seem, I would like to mention a thought to close - this year the Scout Group has planted two Kauri trees. Clevedon Scout Group is now growing firm roots. We have a strong will to live for a thousand years. There will be some good years and some bad in the generations of Scouts to come but now there will always be a strength behind us and with a fresh and positive outlook in mind - we will reach for the sky. Perhaps we planted three.
