History of the Clevedon Scout Group

Group Leaders Report 2000

01 October 1999 to 30 September 2000

The 1999-2000 Scout Year at Clevedon Scout Group has been one generally of success. It seems once more that the year just gets started and it is over all too quickly.

The Cub Pack has been most successfully operated and our Cub Leader Bryan Lawrence has now completed all stages of his Leader Training with the prospect of receiving his wood beads just weeks away. Congratulations Bishop! The Cub Pack has had some very successful themes throughout the year including Australia, Pirates, Star Dome, Robin Hook and Mother Goose. We participated in four Pack Holidays. To the Pack’s credit, this year, we managed to produce some of the most beautiful Cub Crafts, I have seen in a long time. During the year 7 Gold Wero’s were presented to Cubs – an excellent effort on their part! The Cub Pack closed the year at 17 Cub Scouts. Next Scout year the pack will be joined by Lynne Brannagan in a more formal capacity as Assistant Leader as I move on to a new role within the Group.

The Scout Troop has grown substantially throughout the year to its benefit and closed the year at 13 Scouts. The focus for the year was on the troops need to develop youth leaders among its ranks with the Patrol Leader System coming into play. The Sandford Training Course which was attended by PL’s and APL’s from our Group earlier in the year was most successful. I would like to add here that both Tony Francis and Graeme Olney have become outstanding in their field of running youth leader training courses in the Region (not only those which our Group participate in) and they have also facilitated at training for other Scout Leaders to prepare them for work in their own troops. The Clevedon Scout Troop had successful camps and day camps held locally, at Piha and Tipapakanga.

The Group Camp held late last year was a roaring success and a great preparation for the Waitawheta Summer Camps for both Scouts and Cubs held during January 2000. Our Group played host to five visiting Swedish Scouts over the Christmas period and we are sure that they will have long lasting memories of the young people who they met from our Group. The Group also held a sleepover at Camp Sladdin followed by Ten Pin Bowling.

As usual this year our Group participated as part of the Papakura District in the annual ANZAC parade, Church Parade and the 2000 celebration of Founders Day at Haskell park in Manukau City. We recently took part in the World Jamboree on the Internet.

A point of note is that the Cub Pack has had a lot of instances of poor attendance at pack meetings and activities for a variety of reasons. It has been difficult as leaders to overcome the disappointment at times when huge effort and planning on the part of the leaders has not been fruitful. Some programmed activities were cancelled or modified to compensate for the lack of interest on the part of the youth.

The year 2001 has new challenges to offer this Scout Group in its 70th year of Scouting in Clevedon. A Venturer unit will open before the end of the year, there’s a Jamboree to plan and fundraise for, new equipment to secure and a Gang Show to participate in. Not to mention of course the normal Scouting things, which we do because, we like to!

I would like to offer my thanks to the parents who supported us during the year with attendance at Camps, assistance with people transport, providing haulage of Camping equipment and genuine support for the hard work and dedication of the Leader Section of this Group.

I don’t know of another Scout Group where the leaders live their Scouting like the dedication of our leaders, and to Ambo, Bishop, Tely and Lynne, I offer my sincere gratitude.

I would like to thank the Outgoing Committee Section of our Group for the effort, which you have put into the targets of 2000. Particularly I would praise the effort of our Committee Executive, Finance and Building and Maintenance Sub-Committees for some great achievements during what I believe was a difficult year. I wish the incoming committee the best for a most successful 2001.
