History of the Clevedon Scout Group

Group Leaders Report 2001

01 October 2000 to 30 September 2001

Scouting is not about numbers. Its not about achievements. Its about young people.

Oh sure - some of the logistical type things are quite important; those young people are going to need quite a few of them to build up the team motivation to get out there and even if they don't try terribly hard they are almost bound to make an achievement that they would not have had the opportunity of attaining without scouting.

Scouting is about those 30 odd 7 1/2 to 18 1/2 year olds that are in the care of this community organisation at least once a week for a total of at least 2 hours. Its about their lives, their fun, their challenge, their personal growth

So what have we achieved:

  • A new Section - the Venturers

  • Successful evening programmes for all Sections

  • Standing Camps for all Sections; Kaueraunga Valley and that place on the firth of Thames that Ambo couldn't remember the name of!

  • Liteweight Camps for the Venturer Section; Hunua and Waitakeres

  • Training for Youth Leaders to better achieve their goals; Sandford Courses for Conor and Matthew

  • Challenge and Fun for all!

Probably the most successful activity of the year was our Group Camp in August at Chosen Valley, when our Group shared for the first time as three sections together. There is nothing more fulfilling than seeing the benefits of years of scouting reaching out from a Venturer to a Cub. On Sunday the Venturers ran the programme completely for the rest of the Group.

The Scouts have focussed their programme on teamwork and initiative during the 2001 year. The Cubs with their very young Pack at present have had a lot of team building to do. They've had a lot of getting to know you activities based mainly in play and social activities to allow everyone to feel part of the Pack. The Cub Pack takes pride in the older Cubs have going on to Scouts and continuing with their scouting, after having gained in most cases the highest level of badge work that they could.

As a leader I have personally had more challenges as I stepped into a Section leadership role which offered me more than I was expecting in the line of physical and endurance challenges. For those of you who have followed the Venturers activities with interest you will have seen the activeness of the unit as it tramped, socialised, camped, hike and educated our teenagers.

For the other leaders of this Group, 2 Scouts and 2 Venturers Gang Show provided yet another challenging outlet for our scouting and we watched those on stage with pride in their achievements within this Scouting activity.

I have to pay thanks to Bishop, Raksha, Ambo and Tely for their continued leadership in our Group. Bryan Lawrence now completely trained as a leader and ably assisted by Lynne Brannagan moves the Cub Team to provide a fully developed programme. Tony Francis and Graeme Olney have consistently offered the Scout Section guidance to lead themselves through the Patrol system to new heights of scouting excellence. Hayden McAllister has provided excellent leadership of the Venturer Unit as the Unit Chairman and I am grateful to his supreme effort (often in the face of tough physical challenge for us all) in attending every single Venturer activity since the Units inception in February. To Jo McAllister, Jane James and Heather Hargreave our Committee Executive - you have made up for the shortfall in committee numbers over the year and I offer my thanks for your attempt to keep our committee operational. Jo and Jane in particular have kept our Jamboree hopes alive and in December 8 young people and 4 leaders from this Group will depart to Mystery Creek for the experience of a lifetime.

So on to 2002. Lets keep the motivation for the new year - step up our performance in all areas and remember that its all about Youth …. our contribution to the peace of the world.
