History of the Clevedon Scout Group

Group Leaders Report 2002

01 October 2001 to 30 September 2002

All of you who have been involved in this Group before 2002 will have looked around this Scouting family at some point over the last 11 months and concluded that significant change has occurred. I can assure you that the changes have not come about by chance. In January 2002 whilst most of our Group were still holidaying our Group Council held a strategic planning meeting and our new directional foundations were laid.

Each section; Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Committee laid a plan for the year and once pooled together to formulate the Group Plan we surprisingly found that many of our key targets were valid across the Group as a whole. Of course it was at this point that we planned for the introduction of a Kea Club to our Scout Group which as you all know turned into two Kea Clubs and for the first AGM for 8 years we welcome Kea parents.

We have come a long way in a very short time and it is my belief that by focussing our efforts on our areas for improvement and development we have moved the direction of our Group significantly to a new era for our Youth.

Communication, promotion and celebration of our Group has perhaps come about almost by accident or as a result of other activities going on. It is however very important to note that the Scout Group has once again regained a role in our Community. The Clevedon Scouts Out and About which is produced monthly for the Clevedon Round-Up Magazine is also distributed to each child and other interested parties and has proved to be a most valuable publication. In-School recruiting has strengthened our relationship with the Ardmore and Clevedon Primary Schools. The Group Term Newsletter has proved its worth in providing new families with information about the rest of the Group and their activities. Articles in local papers regarding Paul Newman Trust’s Grant and Bishop’s trip to the UK have undoubtedly offered some insight into the excitement of the Clevedon Scout Group. Even within Scouting’s own publication circles we have experienced exposure for our innovation and best practises.

We have an annual report detailing each sections objectives and progress in attaining those goals, which I will pass out shortly. However I would like to detail for you some of the highlights for the Group in brief… I have found it most difficult to select these when there have been so many wonderful and varied activities that this Group has experienced in the space of a year. We have many more highlights in the Annual Report.

Before closing, I would like to thank wholeheartedly the leaders of our Group; Tely Graeme Olney, Ambo Tony Francis, Bishop Bryan Lawrence, Raksha Lynne Brannagan, Tui Linda Roberts, Lil Blue Mary Brady, Pipi Vicki King, Magoo Brent McKee, Possum Rhonda Parsens. Your efforts without exception in each of your sections has made a huge contribution to this Group and the development of its youth. Your personal support to me has been both inspirational and motivational, for which I am extremely grateful. Taking that first step has been made easier with your help.

I would also like to pay a special thank you to Margaret Hawketts our Area Kea Leader, whose support for recruiting and introducing new Keas to this Group has undoubtedly been beyond our expectations. You have given us all so much joy.

To the Committee and in particular it’s Executive Jo McAllister, Bill Morrison and Jay Styles, thank you for your continued support to our activities. In particular I would like to mention that Jo McAllister has as a role model for the Committee worked with every ounce of strength available for this Group during 2002, at the expense of time with her family and her work. Thank you Jo for your concern and love for Scouting as it continues to touch yours and many other lives in this community.

I wish the new Committee every success for the coming year.
