History of the Clevedon Scout Group

The Story of the Clevedon Scout Scarf

(as I know it - by Dorothy Stewart 20 June 1994)

During the war Clevedon boys under the guidance of Leonard Sladdin belonged to the Lone Scouts whose scarf was green with an emblem embroided into the peak in gold.

Later Lennie Sladdin set up a Group of Clevedon Scouts, still using the green scarf but with a yellow fabric forming the peak to cover the embroidered emblem. Thus began the life of the green and yellow scarf.

In approximately 1971 the Clevedon Scout Group and it Committee decided time was ready for change and Ian Duder, Andrew McPherson and I were leaders who helped with the decision making.

After much deliberation it was decided to revert to the blue and black colours which represented the early 1900's Clevedon Rugby Colours. In other words "Clevedon colours".

Ian Duder brought for the committee, the first bolt of blue fabric through a friend who imported such fabrics. New scarves were frantically sewn by a few mothers for the boys to wear to the 6th National jamboree held in Pukekohe in 1972 to act as a launching of the new colours. However, it was there pointed out that all scarf colour changes had to be applied for and registered with the National Headquarters (now National Office) in Wellington, so our lovely new scarves proved to be unlicensed colours at the Jamboree. Luckily the using of the blue scarf edged with black was later approved.

To cement the "Clevedon Theme", Mrs Marie Ancell was asked to draw up a badge design depicting the then new bridge across the Wairoa River, below the hotel, as the bridge was the first of its design to be built in New Zealand. Another reason the bridge was chosen is that no matter from which direction one comes from, one MUST cross a bridge to get to the village of Clevedon. This is now the "bridge" badge sewn into the back of the scarf.

At the same time as the colours of the blue and black scarf were chosen it was decided to change the colouring of the Clevedon Shoulder flash from white background with green "CLEVEDON" as the Scouts were finding it hard to keep it clean and smart looking on their shirts. We changed it to the present brown background with gold lettering.
