History of the Clevedon Scout Group

Leonard Powell Sladdin

Leonard Powell Sladdin joined the Scout Movement in 1925. He was a foundation member of the Havelock North Troop. He attended his first Jamboree in Dunedin as a Junior Scoutmaster the following year.

In 1928 he moved to Auckland and joined the Kitchener Troop at Mt Eden. From there he attended the first Gilwell Training Course to be held in Auckland.

He moved to Clevedon in 1930, where he formed the first Clevedon Troop in 1931 assisted by Chairman Mr R McKenzie. Although away from Clevedon for a short period prior to 1945 he continued to run the troop until 1971 - forty years of Scouting.

In 1953, Scoutmaster Sladdin was awarded the Medal of Merit along with 4 other Aucklanders, each having given over 20 years to Scouting.

In 1955, Mr Sladdin was congratulated for having been 30 years a Scouter and a function was held to mark the jubilee at the Clevedon Hall.

In was in October 1966 that Mr Sladdin, after 35 years as Scoutmaster first mentioned his desire to take a less active role in the troop in the future. In 1969 as Group Scout Leader he was awarded the "Silver Tiki" the second highest award given by the Scout Association of New Zealand, in recognition of his services to the movement.

It is recorded that in 1971 after 40 years as a Scout Leader in Clevedon, Mr L Sladdin was given a farewell by the Clevedon Community. The Chairman said that although Mr Sladdin had left the district everyone knew he would still retain a deep interest in Scouting at Clevedon.

On 6th October 1975 he was awarded the highest award - the Silver Tui, by the Chief Scout of New Zealand, Sir Dennis Blundell.
