SOME THINGS TO DO BEFORE JOTI WEEKEND
Email

  • Prepare a short, standard, message for emailing. You can copy and paste it into an email message. (If you or the Scouts are two-finger typists this will speed up your communications dramatically). It should say:
    1. your Group name

    2. where you are (town and country)

    3. something about the participants in your group (first names, ages) where and when you plan to be on-line during JOTI and how you can be contacted (Email address, chat channels, etc.)

    4. something about your Scouting activities, the JOTI weekend, etc.

    5. you may want to prepare more than one standard message, one that provides more details about Scouting in your country; perhaps the same message in different languages.
  • Collect several Scouting email addresses to start off your email activity. These should be ones of Scouting people who you know will respond and will start your activity quickly. You will collect more during the weekend as other people email you.

  • Add your name and email address to the email lists and contact details on the World Scout JOTI Guest List and NZ Contacts list. A few days before print out the messages from them and give them to several members of your group to compose responses to send.

  • Surfing the Net

  • Have available key JOTI www addresses to look at on your browser.
  • New Zealand Scouting Links
    World Scouting Links

  • They will start off your surfing quickly as each one contains links to other sites.

  • Chatting

  • Download in advance and test any chat program which you intend to use. Become familiar with them and the Scoutlink Servers before the activity. (Remember once you have the program you still have to add in the Scoutlink Servers, so allow a couple of hours for this and for testing).

  • Recommended Chat Software To Use
mIRC which can be downloaded from www.mirc.co.uk (the file is the size of a floppy disk - will take 10 minutes to download). Install this on your computer that you are using for JOTI.

    JOTI Chat Room Locations
Dedicated Scout/Guide Chat Rooms are available through The Scoutlink Network, a group of volunteer Scout and Guide Leaders who maintain chat rooms for your use. The following server addresses take you to a free server in the particular area of choice (Australia, America or Europe). Program mIRC to go to anyone of these:

    Server Location Server Address Ports
    Random Scoutlink server chat.scoutlink.net 6667-6668
Random Australiasian Scoutlink server chat.au.scoutlink.net 6667-6668
Random American Scoutlink Server chat.am.scoutlink.net 6667-6668
Random European Scoutlink server chat.eu.scoutlink.net 6667-6668

    Browser Chat
If you are using a network of computers at a school, university, library or commercial business you may experience problems with mIRC from the computer's firewall. Scoutlink and JOTI offer a facility to chat via a normal Internet Browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape). Go to their web sites http://www.scoutlink.net or http://www.joti.org/ and go to "Web Chat (Java)" section. Browser chat uses the similar layout to mIRC and is easy to use. Please follow their instructions on the web page. Please use browser chat as a last resort measure and not as a replacement to mIRC.

  • Read up on the rules of JOTI and Netiquette and print off copies for the Scouts to read before starting their JOTI activities.

  • Print off a copy of the International Language of Chatting. Some of these things can become very confusing for younger Scouts and with a copy on hand they will be able to quickly understand what people are talking about :-))
